Durch die große Zahl an Quellen- und Weltbüchern ist mit GURPS¸ nach ein wenig Einarbeitungs- und Vorbereitungszeit durch den Spielleiter¸ nahezu jedes Genre oder Setting spielbar. 2000-11-07: Pegasus macht Schluß mit GURPS. Keine deutschen Produkte für das beliebte Spielsystem aus dem Hause Steve Jackson werden mehr im Pegasusverlag hergestellt. Ob allerdings noch Lizenzen exestieren war nicht zu erfahren. Selbst das Spielen eines Karnickels im Stile von Watership Down ist möglich. Für die verschiedenen Genres und Welten sind bisher (im Englischen) über 100 Erweiterungsbände erschienen. GURPS legt besonderen Wert auf die Charakter-Erschaffung. Das System ist punktebasiert¸ d.h. jeder Spieler hat z.B. 100 Charakterpunkte¸ um eine Figur zu erschaffen und kann sich für diese Punkte höhere Attributwerte¸ Vorteile wie z.B. Glück oder Charisma und Fertigkeiten wie z.B. Reiten oder Kernphysik kaufen. Für niedrigere Attributwerte¸ Nachteile wie z.B. Zerstreutheit oder Übergewicht und Marotten wie z.B. "trägt immer rote Socken" erhält der Spieler zusätzliche Punkte zur Erschaffung seiner Figur. Es existieren keine Charakterklassen und keine Erfahrungsstufen. Stattdessen kann jeder Spieler seinen individuellen Charakter erschaffen. Im Basis Set befinden sich auch schon die grundlegenden Regeln¸ um seinen Charakter mit magischen oder psionischen Fähigkeiten auszustatten. Und alle Erfolgswürfe werden mit 3W6 durchgeführt. Der SL bestimmt selbst den Grad der Komplexität des Systems (Stichwort Generisch)¸ indem er bestimmte Regeln zulässt und bestimmte nicht verwendet. Paradebeispiel sind zwei komplette Kampfsysteme (das Basis- und das erweiterte Kampfsystem) die zueinander voll kompatibel sind¸ und aus denen man sich je nach gewünschter Realität (und damit Komplexität) einen Satz Regeln aussucht. Ich persönlich spiele nur noch nach GURPS-Regeln¸ jedoch nicht nur in GURPS-Welten¸ sondern auch in Welten anderer Rollenspiele (z.B. Midgard¸ Space 1889¸ PP&P).
